In France, Diouana hopes to continue her former job as nanny, and looks pre-existent to a cosmopolitan lifestyle. However, upon arrival in France, the couple begins to parcel out Diouana more harshly and she is forced to reverse in the animation of a servant. Diouana becomes increasingly aware of her constrained situation. Eventually she commits suicide in her employers bathroom to escape the harsh reality of her cross new life in France. The author presents Diouana as the view of a young girl in a freshly country. A girl of dreams to seek what Western culture portrays as a better life. Conversely, she never finds it like most. She puts herself out in that location just as an immigrant in modern twenty-four hour period America.
