George Washington was the first president Of the united States Of America as well as one of its founding fathers. When he resigned from office and gave his farewell address, he stated three of his opinions that would be very influential in the development of the United States. During that farewell address, he addressed two very important issues. First was that the United States of America should remain in the most neutral position possible when it came to foreign affairs (this would be ignored by latter presidents).Second was that no political parties should be formed within the new government. These were significant statements because they helped to shape the foundation and cultural beginnings of the new American government. In addition to his farewell advice, he informally set the presidential term limit to two terms, a tradition which has been upheld to this day with very few exceptions. (Note: FDA was the only president to hold three terms) These opinions were important to him because he believed that they would enable the people to grow together as one strong, unified nation. President Thomas Jefferson was also a very important and influential president because of his strong opinions on creating a unifying domestic policy. His opinions about the power given to the president were also important. In one of his most famous moments he said, Mel are all Republicans, we are all Federalists. This was a very important moment because it demonstrated an emerging American spirit and encouraged one of the ideals instilled by George Washington.By unifying the people of the efferent parties as Americans, he helped to promote a feeling of unity among the states. This was one of the ideals promoted by George Washington when he warned America not to form political parties; its the same issue Of unity, just addressed from a different angle. It also helped to calm the growing distress and conflict between the Republican and Federalist parties. Another very important accomplishment that happened when Jefferson was in office was the Louisiana Purchase. While it was significant because it more than doubled the size of the United States, it was also a source of much debate. In the arguments against Jefferson there were many people who believed that the Louisiana Purchase was unconstitutional. Most prominent was whether the President had the power to spend 15 million dollars on a segment of land without the approval of the people (Congress, etc). His choice to spend the money was important because it basically said, Im the president and I have power. His actions dont directly reflect his stated beliefs in strong state government, but they do illustrate the fact that he often chose the most pragmatic route in his decisions and put the good of the country over his personal beliefsJohn Marshall, the first Supreme Court justice, was a very influential figure because his beliefs and opinions developed and gave power to the Supreme Court and the judiciary branch for the first time. One of the most important contributions he made for the Su preme Court was the concept of judicial review. After the case of Mammary Vs. . Madison, the Supreme Court was given the power to review laws, and court cases in order to determine whether a law or case was constitutional. John Marshall also extended the power of the Supreme Court to cover all matters not explicitly mentioned to be governed in the state.

Hurricanes Essays (1143 words) - Vortices, , Term Papers

Hurricanes Summer is over and fall has arrived- but many people to the south of us are observing another season- hurricane season. According to the Montshire Museum of Science, "hurricanes usually occur in the North Atlantic from June to November, with most of them in September." On average, between six to eight hurricanes form in the North Atlantic or North Pacific each year (Montshire). However, as many as 15 have occurred in the Atlantic in a single year. Hurricanes are powerful, whirling storms that measure several hundred miles in diameter. The winds near the center of a hurricane blow at speeds of 74 miles per hour or more (World Book, 400). Many hurricanes leave a trail of widespread death and destruction. The definition of a hurricane, according to World Book Encyclopedia, is an area of low pressure that forms over oceans in tropical regions. Such a storm in the North Pacific Ocean is called a typhoon, and one in the South Pacific or Indian Ocean is called a cyclone. Most hurricanes originate within the doldrums, a "narrow equatorial belt characterized by intermittent calms, light variable breezes, frequent squalls, and lying between the northeast and southeast trade winds" (Encarta). Hurricanes consist of high-velocity winds blowing circularly around a low-pressure center, known as the eye of the storm. The low-pressure center develops when the warm, saturated air prevalent in the doldrums is under run and forced upward by denser, cooler air. From the edge of the storm toward its center, the atmospheric pressure drops sharply and the wind velocity rises. The winds attain maximum force close to the point of lowest pressure. Encarta Encyclopedia states that "hurricanes generally move in a path resembling the curve of a parabola". Also, that in the "Northern Hemisphere the storms usually travel first in a northwesterly direction and in the higher latitudes turn toward the northeast". "In the Southern Hemisphere the usual path of the hurricane is initially to the southwest and subsequently to the southeast". Hurricanes travel at varying rates. Those areas in which the hurricane winds blow in the same direction as the general movement of the storm are subjected to the maximum destructive violence of the hurricane. According to the research team at Storm Central, hurricanes go through a set of stages from birth to dissipation. Tropical disturbance is the beginning of a hurricane, and it has "no strong winds or closed isobars around an area of low pressure containing cloudiness and some precipitation". As the surface pressure begins to fall and winds increase to between 20 and 34 knots the tropical disturbances become tropical depressions. Tropical Depression has "at least one isobar that accompanies a drop in pressure in the center of the storm". Surface winds increase to speeds of 35 to 64 knots. The storm becomes more organized and the appearance begins to resemble a hurricane because of the intensifying circulation around the center of the storm. This phase is called the Tropical Storm. A tropical storm is "stronger than a depression as the central pressure drops, resulting in several closed isobars at the surface". Some tropical storms only progress this far and "die back down", several storms start out appearing as if they will be stronger and progress faster but lose their strength early on. However, if the storm proceeds it begins to take on the familiar hurricane appearance. This is a "pronounced rotation which develops around the center core". The eye develops corresponding to the "lowest atmospheric pressure near the center of the storm with spiral rain bands rotating around the eye of the storm". As surface pressures continue to drop, strengthening the pressure gradient of the storm, the "storm becomes a hurricane when sustained wind speeds exceed 64 knots". When a storm has advanced to the hurricane stage it can then be rated by the amount of strength that it has. This is done so by using the Saffir-Simpson scale, also known as the Simpson and Riehl Scale. The scale is a 1-5 rating based on the hurricane's present intensity. This is used to give an estimate of the "potential property damage and flooding expected along the coast from a hurricane landfall"(Hurricane99). Researchers at the Hurricane 99 weather site also say that, "wind speed is the determining factor in the scale, as storm surge values are highly dependent on the slope of the continental shelf in the landfall region". Well, if there is information on a subject then there must have been some way to find that information out. "Since 1953, U.S. military aircraft have been flying into hurricanes to measure

Taking the LSAT Under Special Circumstances

Taking the LSAT Under Special Circumstances Taking the LSAT is a huge step in your quest for a career in the litigation world. In fact, its necessary for almost every law school application out there! So, what if you need to take the LSAT under special circumstances? Perhaps you cannot test on the Sabbath, and need to register for the test on another date. Is that possible? Or, perhaps you simply cannot afford the LSAT fees. What can you do about it? Below, youll find some information about taking the LSAT under these very special circumstances, and the steps needed to complete your registration if you fall under one of these categories. Sabbath Observers If you happen to observe the Sabbath on Saturdays, and thus, cannot take an exam on that date, then what are your options if youre trying to get into law school? LSAC (Law School Admission Council) has already make arrangements for you. If you check the LSAT test dates, youll see that the test is offered another day of the week every time its given on a Saturday. Typically, those days are Mondays. You can register as a Saturday Sabbath Observer (instructions online), but a hold will be placed on your account until LSAC receives a letter from your rabbi or minister on official stationery that explains your religious affiliation. Lets say your rabbi isnt the timeliest of sorts. Youll have to be persistent in your request, then! All letters must be received by the late registration deadline for your test date, or you will not be able to test on that date. Sure, youll get your cash back, but you may miss the application deadline for your school of choice. Better ask early! Letters will be kept on file for you, so you wont have to ask for a new one if you decide to push your LSAT test back to another date or want to retest. And for the record, if you are taking the LSAT on a Sabbath Observers test date, you will not be able to take the test on a regularly scheduled test date (on a Saturday) in the future. No - Essay Example Competitive rivalry The competition in the automobile industry is relatively high since the companies have flooded the market thus offering customers’ a number of choices. This high competition result to companies earning low profits since the costs of the entire competition will also be high. Moreover, Better Places will face competition from other energy producers such since they all struggle to occupy a stable position in the market. A number of oil companies have linked with major car producers across the globe whereby they make lots of profits are being made. Threat from new competitors The industry dealing with hybrid electric vehicles is stable and well established. It has maintained a significant average annual growth for many years. Thus, the potential level of threat from the new competitors is categorized as medium. This is because competition in this industry is already high hence it is quite discouraging for the new companies that are struggling to get into the ma rket. However, one of the largest threats is from the new competitors that are environmentally conscious in their lines of production. Threat from consumers Consumption begins with wholesalers and retailers who demand lower pricing for the products. Large retailing businesses sell the product to many users whereas internet marketers or retailers cover a broader region in terms of sales. All these customers opt for Better Place’s Auto’s product because of its convenient price and distribution. However, the demand for low pricing is a major threat for the company since raw materials and other production costs are too high in the car manufacturing industry. Threat from suppliers of raw materials As the trend of car fashions change from time to time, there is need for quality and modern products from the vehicle industry. Thus, for Better Place to maintain its position in the market, it should maintain its good relationship with suppliers since the prices of raw materials are fluctuating in the industry. This would enable the firm to acquire the relevant materials for its production at reasonable prices, or else, when the relationship is poor, the company would have some difficulty obtaining the raw materials for production. Threat from close substitutes Most likely, competitors who are coming up with similar products that are environmental friendly are a greater threat to Better Place. It is expected that all the products from the company would outplay products from other companies with unparalleled quality and uniqueness. A Company such as Honda Motors is among the oldest manufacturers in the car industry thus products from such company can pose a threat to the company’s products because of the famous name. Customers consider product differentiation since there are so many vehicles in the industry with the same features hence there is little threat from substitutes. 2. Scenario Planning Scenario planning enables a firm to describe what is ea sy and possible to attain over a specific time frame. It permits specification of particular objectives which are supposed to be attained in a sequence of both investment and implementation decisions. It therefore helps a firm to plan for the entire project regardless of the obstacles that might come along the way. The following steps are depicted in the Better Place plan: Identification of Stakeholders The company identified stakeholders whose interests were similar to the founders’

Hypersensitivity Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 2500 words

Hypersensitivity - Essay Example On the other hand, simple organic substances are more commonly known to cause delayed reactions. An individual may be exposed to these allergens through inhalation, ingestion, injection, or skin contact. (Porth, 2002) The classifications of hypersensitivity are not dependent on severity, but the type of cells, and location of tissues that is affected. Hypersensitivity reactions are classified into four types: type I (mediated by IgE), type II (tissue-specific), type III (immune-complex mediated), and type IV (cell-mediated) (Holmes, 2003). The first three types are mediated by antibodies, and the fourth type is mediated by T-cells, which produce a delayed reaction or onset of symptoms. However, it is seldom that one type occurs in isolation from the other (Nowak & Handford, 2004). During a hypersensitivity reaction or allergic reaction, an individual is usually prescribed with bronchodilators, steroids, and antihistamines. This paper will discuss type I hypersensitivity or anaphylactic hypersensitivity, as well as the pharmacokinetics and pharmacodynamics of the three agents mentioned above. In addition, Chinese herbal medicines will also be briefly discussed. This type describes the allergy as the immediate hypersensitivty or anaphylactic hypersensit... In addition, Chinese herbal medicines will also be briefly discussed. Type I Hypersensitivity This type describes the allergy as the immediate hypersensitivty or anaphylactic hypersensitivity. It is mediated by the IgE antibody, which results to mast cell degranulation (Porth, 2003). The most common examples are systemic anaphylaxis, hay fever, allergic rhinitis, eczema, and asthma. The mucous membranes of the organs are very richly supplied with mast cells that are filled with IgE antibodies, and these mast cells are ideally located to be able to detect the entry of antigens. Upon initial entry, the individual or host will not manifest any symptoms or reactions. However, the cells have already captured and processed the allergen, and the antigen has then bound with IgE on mast cells, which have caused the cells to degranulate. These granules then spread into the circulation and binds with the mast cells throughout the body. Subsequently, the host is ready for the next contact with the allergen. (Nowak & Handford, 2004) Now during the second exposure, the mast cells are activated, causing the release of mediators, which then result to the immediate responses of the immune system, and this response is mostly cause by the release of preformed histamines (Ewan, 1998; Nowak & Handford, 2004). Kay (2001) gave a concise aetiology of acute allergy. She summarized that immediate hypersensitivity is brought about by the release of preformed granule-associated mediators, membrane derived lipids, cytokines, and chemokines when an allergen interacts with IgE that is bound to mast cells or basophils by the high affinity IgE receptors. In addition, the primary inducers of IgE are interleukin-4 and

Extreme sports Essay Example for Free

Extreme sports Essay The X Games is one of the more popular sporting events, where people gather to watch athletes compete in extreme sports. Some of these sports include skateboarding, mountain biking and motorcycle racing. The community around extreme sports can sometimes be seen as exclusive and particular when it comes to defining what an extreme sport is and who is a true extremist. Originally, I believe the extreme sport community created this division of athletics because they thought their sports did not fit in at a standard sporting event. Part of the reason some the extreme athletes participate in their sport is because they see it as  a way of defying the boundaries of what is seen as a typical sport. Most extreme sports are about pushing limits. Extreme sports are not conventional in the sense that practicing isn’t really necessary, a coach isn’t necessary, and the sports are very individualistic. Some of the extreme sport athletes do it for the adrenaline rush. They do it purely for themselves. Their reasoning contrasts to some of the other sports where lots of practice and coaching is essential for success. A lot of the athletes that compete in non extreme sports are focused on getting sponsors or when you’re younger, getting recruited for college. For the extreme sport community this is considered to be feeding into the capitalist society/culture. Part of extreme sports is about taking risks and not having anything to fall back on. The X games have put a strain on the extreme sports community because some seem to think that the event has altered the true goal of the sport, which is to take risks and to go against the mainstream culture. Some people seem to believe that it has become like the other sporting events, in the sense that there are now big sponsors and judges. They argue that the extreme athletes are no longer taking risks because they want to make  sure they can land the trick. The goal is no longer to try new tricks and push the bar, but its more about doing what you know will please the judges. This goes against what extremist originally wanted for the sport. It takes the risk out of it and you no longer do it for yourself but for the judges. The fact that there are sponsors is also a cause for controversy because some people see it as the athletes being sellouts. For example, Tony Hawk is famous skate boarder. He has a lot of sponsors, video games, and ads. Some say he is no longer a true extremist because of it. At the same time, what makes the sports in the X games more extreme than say diving or gymnastics? Both sports are very individualistic and there is a lot of a risk, yet they are not seen as extreme sports. I think the extreme sports community has tried to make their community too exclusive and extreme sports benefit from the X games and the sponsors and judges it brings. The event does bring aspects that were not originally a part of the sport, but the extreme sports community will grow now. Extremist can still continue to push limits and do the sport for themselves despite what others may think.

Stolen Lives by Malika Oufkir and Michele Fitoussi Essay -- Books Lite

Stolen Lives by Malika Oufkir and Michele Fitoussi For my final paper, I read a book titled 'Stolen Lives' by Malika Oufkir and Michele Fitoussi. This is the true story of Malika's life. This book is divided into two parts; the first part is a description of Malika's fairy-tale life. She lived alongside a princess, in a palace, and was wanting for nothing. The second part of the book tells the story of Malika and her family's time spent in prison and the suffering they went through. Malika Oufkir was born in 1953 in Morocco to a loving mother and father. Her family was very close to King Muhammad V and the royal family of Morocco. Her father was appointed the chief aide to the king after playing an active role in bringing the king back from exile. The king had a young daughter, Lalla Mina, the same age as Malika and wanted them to grow up together so he asked that Malika come and live with him. This was not a request her parents could say no to. She was basically taken from her parents without much explanation to her and brought to live with the royal family. Her mother was allowed to visit her but the visits became less and less frequent. Malika lived inside of the palace where she attended school. She lived a luxurious life, and was treated like a princess herself, but felt like she was a prisoner. The palace was surrounded by walls and her every move was watched so she could not go outside of these walls. The only time she could leave was when the royal family left to vacation at another palace. The king treated Malika very well, as if she were his own daughter. After routine surgery, King Muhammad V died when Malika was seven. King Hassan II, the son of King Muhammad, took over the throne. Malika?s mother thoug... ...e survived all this time in the conditions they had to endure. But I don?t think they could have survived if it weren?t for the support they showed for one another. This is an amazing story of the human spirit and of a bond that held this family together. I would recommend this book to any person that likes human-interest stories. I think we need to be aware that this still does go on in some parts of the world. I enjoy learning about history and this story provided some historical information. I realize how far we have come in this country with women?s rights and how primitive some societies still treat women. Also, it served as a reminder to me that different parts of the world have very diverse beliefs and how lucky we are to live in this country. Works Cited Oufkir, Malika, and Michele Fitoussi. Strange Meeting

La’Monta Smith 11/19/12 AP Lit and Comp Strange Meeting By Wilfred Owen In Strange Meeting wrote by Wilfred Owen we enter this poem Owen seemingly escapes out of a battle with very little knowledge of where he is exactly at. After exploratory investigation among the many piteous men and surroundings he discovers he is in the pits of hell. Afterwards, we are drawn into a conversation between the narrator and a fellow solder. Here, we transfer from the narration and dialogue to the poems’ monologue where we begin to dig into the depths of the solder’s spirit. The solder claims that has reason to mourn because of the years he didn’t get to live and how he was cheated out of his future. He also points out that solders are taken for granted by the ones they aren’t in war, and are just content of the spoils of the solders brought them. Blood Boiling indicates that the men, most likely fellow solders , don’t feel accomplished in their voyages in war. The solder then begins to reminisce on who he was before the war, and what he could’ve and would’ve done Differently, but is brought back to reality that he is still in hell. Owen continues to embrace the solders thoughts as he briefly talks about his youth before he began marching the â€Å"retreating world† . A sense of regret is apparent when he says that he wish he could cleanse his soul by washing away the blood that he as spilled. He continues by claiming that he gave his all in war, but he did not expect the amount of death he is surrounded with . Nearing the end, the bond between the Owen and the solder is It is Important to pay attention to the word diction that this poem also has. With horror, the primary Speaker Realizes that it was he who took the man’s life and future away but then rationalizes with Him by stating they were put in an arena and their deaths were inevitable.

Analysis Of The Poem Yolo - 1041 Words

Greetings Cocalico students, staff, faculty, family, and friends. Like many of you I have been anticipating this day since the beginning of senior year, and WOW what a fun year it has been. We’ve won a league football title, shared a few laughs, tore apart the spirit monkey, shared a few laughs, we had our tennis and lacrosse teams go into districts, shared a few laughs, and most importantly, make some lifelong memories along the way (and did I mention share a few laughs). Today I am going to transform the ever popular saying â€Å"YOLO† (You only live once) into a more realistic, and more fitting phrase, YODO. YODO is not the famous Star Wars character Yoda’s brother, but rather the title of my speech and more importantly the phrase I live by†¦show more content†¦Throughout my high school years I have and continually questioned that popular belief, contributing to over 7 different sports teams, groups, and organizations throughout my high school years a nd it could not have been more rewarding. Questioning things allows us to find the reality, and most times, the reward, of truth in our lives. Continually searching for this truth will allow you to love and give meaning to life. My second piece of advice as you wander out into the â€Å"real world† is to be fearless. Franklin Delano Roosevelt was spot on with these famous words from his Inaugural Address, â€Å"The only thing we have to fear is fear itself†. As redundant as his quote is, it could not be more perfect in describing the key to enjoying life. Being fearless means that your fears should not be in the way of experiencing opportunities that create lifelong memories. The concept of a fear is absolutely pointless for two reasons. The first reason is that you should never be afraid to try something new. When I was younger, I was absolutely terrified of roller coasters. And I mean terrified. For those of you who are familiar with Hershey Park, the Trailblazer was a stretch for me to go on. As I grew older (and sadly not much taller), I came to realize that there was no reason for my fear. It was simply something new. When I finally rode my first big roller coaster
